Debra McDonald Nangala

Debra McDonald Nangala was born in the 1969 at Papunya Camp. She is the grand daughter
of the late Shorty Lungkata Tjungurrayi (c.1920-1987).
Shorty was a Pintupi man from Lake MacDonald in the Gibson Desert, Central Australia. In
1948 he moved to Haasts Bluff and Papunya, both Debra and Shorty’s stories refer to his
country of Lake MacDonald.
Debra was married to the nephew of Turkey Tolson and son of the great female artist Mitjili
Napurulla.
The stories that are painted by Debra tell of the secret Ceremonial sites at the back of
the aboriginal community of Kintore near Western Australia/Northern Territory boarder.
The images were passed on to Deborah by Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula but not the story
or The Dreaming, as the stories are important Men’s Stories and are not to be told to
women.
