PAINTINGS

Aboriginal paintings are based on their Dreaming stories (Tjukurrpa) to which the artist has a strong relationship and responsibility to uphold. Each dreaming in turn has specific songs and ceremony which are often represented in Aboriginal art. The complete meaning of these paintings is often hidden within the icons and dot work used to depict theses stories and is revealed to the onlooker accord...ing to their level of initiation in Aborininal culture. The ownership, management, performance and paintings related to these Dreamings are dependent upon the knowledge and status of each artist and are recreated on a permanent medium as a way of conserving their culture and their relationship to their country.
